4 Tips For Emotional Release

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

Humans are emotional beings, and it is natural for us to express our feelings openly and without fear. Yet, from a young age we’re told to sit down and be quiet instead. The world has led us to believe that this is the way to love and acceptance.

We all have to deal with daily emotions that include fear, anger, and shame. And, we have been in situations that trigger those feelings. To top it off, we sometimes can’t even process or manage our emotions properly, which leads us to bottle them up.

Hiding your emotions is an instinctive way of defending yourself against those ones that cause you to feel uncomfortable or that just don’t feel good. However, no matter how much you may try to hide these feelings from others and even from yourself, there is no escape from them. In fact, they will only get worse if they are not acknowledged.

Eventually they are stored in our organs and our muscles. They make their way to our brain and become poisonous thoughts. Not soon after that, they turn septic and lead to mental and yes, even physical illnesses. Now, you might not want to accept this, but the truth is we’re the ones creating this toxic environment in our bodies. We’re literally making ourselves sick from the inside out.

If you’re suffering from repressed emotions, the only way to heal, move on, and grow into the next part of your life is to take the steps to finally let them go. The first, and most important step is to know you’re not alone.

The second step is to keep reading. We put together four techniques that you can practice for emotional release. With commitment and consistency, they will help you let go of what has you blocked and is holding you back. You’re worthy of putting yourself first, and it is imperative for your emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Take care of your emotions because it’s the only way you can live a peace filled and purposeful life.

Let’s get started.

  1. Recognize Your Emotions

Self-awareness is one of the most important, yet least recognized techniques in your personal development arsenal. With the internet and social media right at your fingertips, and notifications constantly going off, it’s easy to brush your feelings aside while being connected to other people all the time.

Yet, being aware of each emotion and how it affects your mental state is crucial. In order to heal we have to be able to fully process what’s happening in each moment, and how our emotions play the part in them. This is where mindfulness comes in.

Mindful meditation is where you sit somewhere quiet and focus on your breathing. Learn how to accept the emotion, face it head-on with the realization that it, too, will pass. Going through this intimate process helps you come face-to-face with your emotions and allows you to connect with yourself and Source on a deeper level.

2. Express Your Emotions

Each one of our emotions need to be expressed in one way or another. This is how we release negative energy and draw in positive energy. It’s also how our minds process emotions and allow us to fully heal. Remember that true healing can only happen when both your mind and body work together.

So, ask yourself: what do you need to do to so that you can express your emotions authentically? Do you want to brainstorm ideas and ways to express your feelings? Or would you rather go with whatever feels right in the moment? Just be sure that whatever you choose is the right decision for you and what you feel most comfortable with.

Here’s a few ideas to help get you started. Try these out to see which one works for you. Remember to focus on your emotion and visualize it floating away from your body.

  • Go for a walk

  • Do some journaling

  • Hit a punching bag

  • Dance

  • Scream into a pillow

  • Cry

  • Paint

  • Breathe deeply

3. Indulge in Some Much-Need Me-Time

Practicing self-love and self-care is something else we tend to neglect and put on the back burner. Although both men and women are guilty of this, studies show that men are a lot better than women at getting it done. Women tend to be the caregivers of others, sometimes to the detriment of their own well-being.

Needless to say, we all need to re calibrate, and renew ourselves regularly, and learning how to put yourself first and taking care of your minds and bodies takes time.

Start with setting aside 10 minutes each day to do something just for you. For example, if you like to draw, then use that time to create some art. If you like to read, grab a book, and read for a few minutes. It doesn’t matter if you’re doodling or painting an entire canvas or reading 10 sentences from the book. The health benefits are the same.

Once you’ve gotten those 10 minutes down, take it up a notch. Why not savor a full 30 minutes of me-time as you take a walk, reach out to a friend, take a long bath?

To make self-care a priority, use these simple pleasures as a way of nourishing your soul. Soon, you’ll notice the benefits have trickled down to your mind and body for a happier, healthier you.

4. Celebrate Yourself

Whether this is your first time releasing your emotions or the one-hundredth time, you need to celebrate! Be proud of all the hard work you’ve put in to accomplish your self-care goals!

You took the time to process your emotions and release that pent-up negativity and aggression. That’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. It’s cathartic and it opens you up to rich, fulfilling experiences for a healthy and productive life.

Caring for yourself and treating yourself the same way, no better than you treat everyone else is the most important part of self-love and self-care. It’s okay to love and care for others and share the best of you with them. However, you will never get to the best part of you if you don’t make your mental and emotional health your biggest priority.

Releasing pent up negative emotions will free your mind, body, and soul. Once you master that part, every other part of your life with flow and be filled with abundance.
